The degree programme of Veterinary Medicine serves as scientific and practical education for the veterinary
profession in all its specialties. This course of studies should impart well-founded fundamental knowledge
in all fields of veterinary medicine and confer competence and problem-solving capacity by means of practice-
oriented instruction. More comprehensive education in a field of the student’s choice is to relay practical
and specialised knowledge beyond the general requirements. This should render graduates capable of practicing
their profession by supplying them with a better start into their field of specialisation. The qualification profile of
graduates of veterinary medicine describes the intellectual and practical qualifications as well as social skills
necessary to attain professional competence and conveys the absolute necessity of post-graduate continuing
education.

The requirements for admission to the degree programme of veterinary medicine are reflected in the regulations
of the Decree Regulating Entitlement to Study at Austrian Universities 1998
(Universitätsberechtigungsverordnung, UBVO).

Requirement for admission to the doctoral programme is either
1) graduation from the degree programme based on this curriculum or
2) graduation from the degree programme based on the Federal Law Regulating the Studies of Veterinary Medicine,
(Veterinärmedizin-StudienGesetz, VetMed-StG 1993) Federal Law Gazette No. 346/1993 or

requirements.

Individual Degree Programme Biomedicine & Biotechnology:
This course of studies should enable the degree holders to correctly apply fundamental working methods of natural
sciences and laboratory technology. Furthermore, alumni will achieve special skills in applying methods of molecular
and cell biology when working on complex biomedical issues. At the same time, the course of studies enables them
to use animal models as well as alternative methods in preclinical as well as biomedical research.
The graduates should further be capable, to critically judge scientific findings and results when working on specific
problems. Another focal point of the study plan is the active involvement of the students in ongoing research projects
from very early on (1st semester). Thus they will receive a thorough training in team-oriented work on complex research
projects.

The requirements for admission to the indicidual degree programme of Biomedicine&Biotechnology are reflected in
the regulations of the Decree Regulating Entitlement to Study at Austrian Universities 1998
(Universitätsberechtigungsverordnung, UBVO).
In addition, the registration has to be approved by the Rector of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna
(according to § 17 UniStG).

and practical aspects of the equine industry, stud farm management and horse breeding and equestrian
sports, including health care, oeconomics, business administration and marketing. Besides teaching basic
knowledge which presumably will be valid over a longer time period, students shall have sufficient time to
train collection of information, problem analysis and practical application of their knowledge and skills.

The requirements for admission to the indicidual degree programme of Equine Sciences are reflected in
