Vetmeduni Vienna’s international PhD program offers foreign students the chance of a sound education and allows its graduates to boost their career opportunities in their home countries. This applies to six alumni from Pakistan, who recently met again in their homeland at the Veterinary Faculty of Lahore during a lecture given by Michael Hess, one of the former PhD supervisors. All have excellent careers even to the level of a faculty Dean since graduating from Vetmeduni Vienna.

It was a surprising coincidence for Michael Hess, the head of the Department for Farm Animals and Veterinary Public Health, to meet former PhD students of Vetmeduni Vienna during a scientific mission in Pakistan. Six alumni of our university's international PhD program attended his guest lecture at the University of Veterinary and Animal Science, Lahore. Hafsa Zaneb, Sadaf Aslam, Muhammad Imtiaz, Kashif Nauman, Asif Zahoor and Habib ur Rehman were pleased to meet a representative of Vetmeduni Vienna and, in the case of Hess, as head of the University Clinic for Poultry and Fish, to meet one of the former supervisors again. The other supervising institutions were the Institute of Meat Hygiene, the Institute of Animal Nutrition, the University Clinic for Ruminants and the University Equine Clinic.

The professional careers of the six alumni show that they benefited from studying abroad and especially at the only University of Veterinary Medicine in Austria. Hafsa Zaneb now is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Histology, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore. Sadaf Aslam, Asif Zahoor and Kashif Numan are all assistant professors at the Departments of Microbiology, Meat Sciences, and Anatomy and Histology of the same university facility. Muhammad Imtiaz is also assistant professor at the Department of Animal Sciences, University of Sargodha, and Habib ur Rehman is Full Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Bio-Sciences, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore.

The setting for the surprising alumni meeting was the invitation for Michael Hess by the Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, Habib ur Rehman, to give a scientific lecture at Lahore University on 18 January 2018. All six former PhD students were offered a full scholarship from HEC Pakistan for participating in Vetmeduni Vienna’s PhD-programme. Another PhD-fellow from Pakistan, who works at the Department of Fish Medicine, will graduate later this semester. To promote these good relations, a Letter of Intent on the formation of an academic partnership at the highest institutional level was signed in 2014 (link to PDF [Link 1]). In addition to the PhD-programme [Link 2] of Vetmeduni Vienna, which is supervised by the respective clinics and institutes, there are also two special graduate schools for Pig and Poultry medicine (PAP [Link 3]) as well as for Population Genetics (POPGEN Vienna [Link 4]).
