Research

  • I am interested in a variety of topics integrating behaviour, ecology, and morphology, particularly of birds, with an emphasis on comparative approaches.
  • I am especially paying attention to the influences of the environment on behaviour, especially communication, mating systems and cognition, and on the interdependences between morphology and behaviour.

Research Summary

The main goal of my research is to understand how ecology and behaviour interact on the mechanistic and evolutionary level. I am particularly fascinated by the question how morphology mediates these interactions, and I am equally captivated by the evolutionary and ecological processes that generate and maintain biological diversity. That diversity forms also the base for applying comparative methods to analyze the evolution of behavioural and morphological traits. My current work concerns the relationship between intra-specific and inter-specific variation in the course of diversification, the role of habitat in acoustical and optical communication, the evolution of mating systems and social interactions, and the ecological conditions for the evolution of cognitive skills, and how they in turn influence evolutionary processes. Finally, I am interested to apply scientific thinking and results to conservation.
