Main Areas of Research at the Vetmeduni Vienna

In order to structure research at the Vetmeduni Vienna and strengthen research co-operation within the university, so-called “Profillinien” or main areas of research have been set. Due to this the Vetmeduni Vienna gains a clear profile and the integration into national and European research programmes is secured.


The following main areas of research have been set:

  • Regulation of physiological and pathophysiological processes
  • Infection, prevention and innovative diagnostics
  • Biomedicine and biotechnology
  • Food safety and risk analysis


Internal Criteria for Promotion


There exist several criteria for the promotion of new main research areas, which include the scientific performance of the applicant in the relevant field of research and the scientific relevance of the specified field. The VUW’s aim is to promote excellent research, the promotion of international visibility of the scientific work groups, the increase of third-party funds and the promotion of early stage researchers.


Integral Solutions


On the occasion of the reformation of the research structure, the main areas of research have been set. Thus it should be possible to integrate the different research fields of the Vetmeduni Vienna according to the university’s concepts. The concepts of the Vetmeduni Vienna include the establishment of integral solutions in research and teaching in the following fields:

  • Animal health
  • Human health through the prevention of zoonoses
  • Food qualitiy and food safety
  • Interrelationships between humans, animals and environment
  • The conservation of biological diversity and animal welfare


For researchers at the Vetmeduni Vienna, it is possible to apply for main research area advancement four times a year. A special board for the main research areas then has to decide whether or not applications are granted.
