The Institute of Microbiology deals with microbiological aspects regarding animal health, food safety and animal hygiene. Our current research focuses on deciphering virulence and persistence mechanisms of selected bacterial genera like Bacillus, Mycoplasma and Staphylococcus, with particular emphasis on host-pathogen-interactions. Understanding the mechanisms of pathogenicity on the molecular level broadens the way for developing new diagnostic tools or treatment and prevention of bacterial infections.

Our diagnostic group works with clinical samples of all kinds of animals, applying accepted standard tests, molecular state-of-the-art techniques and innovative procedures for bacterial species delineation.

A further focus of our activities are molecular-epidemiological analyses and taxonomical work on not-yet identified microorganisms.
