Currently, genome annotation systematically discards overlapping genes (OLGs) due to an assumed information-content constraint. However, strand-specific RNAseq, ribosome profiling and mutational analysis revealed many overlapping genes in E. coli EHEC, showing an unexpected layer of genetic complexity in this pathogen. Such overlapping bacterial genes may constitute a coding reserve, opening up new research in genetics and evolutionary biology, which will be discussed in this lecture by Prof. Siegfried Scherer, the holder of the chair for microbial ecology at the TU Munich-Weihenstephan.
