Background

The poultry sector plays an important role worldwide with increasing production, consumption and employment rates. There are several common goals in the poultry production strategies,
such as improvement of the efficacy of production with proper feed utilization, and the improvement of animal health to produce safe and high quality products. Already in 2011, the University of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Pannonia started to collaborate in order to address some main challenges in poultry production, aiming to utilize the different but synergistic scientific profiles of the two institutions. The Clinic for Poultry at Vetmeduni Vienna performs research on poultry diseases and diagnostics. Research is directly incorporated into teaching of poultry medicine, a strategy also followed by the Department of Animal Sciences at the Georgikon Faculty of the University of Pannonia in Keszthely with regard to poultry nutrition. The Department of Animal Sciences is regarded the leading poultry nutritional institution in Hungary with a reputation that widely exceeds national borders. Both institutions have widespread contacts with participants of the poultry sectors and relevant institutions. The main goal of our project is to connect the two universities and poultry professionals of both countries through common education and exchange programs including research cooperation. However, the impact of the project exceeds national borders indicated also by the CEPI Summer School, which was already held successfully in 2017 and 2018.
