Veterinarians and veterinary officers can be considered as epitomes of ethically challenging professions. They regularly have to deal with decisions that incorporate moral aspects. One need only think of the euthanasia of domestic animals, the monitoring of animal welfare of farm animals from stable to slaughter or the culling of livestock when faced with an animal disease.

The project “Vethics E-Portfolio”, funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Health and Consumer Protection and carried out by the Messerli Research Institute, Unit of Ethics and Human-Animal Studies, is developing an online ethics course for official veterinarians, practical veterinarians and veterinary medicine students.

The long-term goal is to enable official veterinarians and (future) veterinarians to deal with ethical questions in a structured and informed manner.
