Herd health management for small ruminants

To remedy health problems in sheep and goat herds, we offer the following options:

1. Referral of two to three diseased animals to the Clinic
2. Herd health management in the context of a farm visit

Typical diseases in problematic farms that play a role in herd management include:

udder diseases, mastitis, milking hygiene, diseases in young animals, infectious diseases, endo- and ectoparasites, metabolic disorders

Herd management process

Individualised management ensures a chance for success. The following steps are conducted within specific management areas of your farm:

∙ assessment of status quo
∙ consultancy and definition of goals
∙ developing a strategy to achieve goals
∙ conducting the working programme
∙ monitoring of working programme based on defined indicators
∙ exact documentation of processes

Farm visit

You herd health management supervisor will schedule an appointment for a farm visit to assess all relevant parameters. Based on a precise check list and depending on the type of farm the following parameters are assessed:

∙ milk production: milk output, milk protein and milk fat content, cell count…
∙ feeding: feeding, silo maintenance, drinking trough maintenance…
∙ farming: stable system, hygiene, management…
∙ udder health: milking process, California Mastitis Test, bacteriological testing...

The regions

The services of the ARGE herd health management initiative are available in the provinces of Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria and Upper Austria. However, individual cases may be handled in other provinces as well.

The costs

The costs resulting from these services for the farm depend on the nature of the problem, the distance to the University and required remediation measures.

The provided services comprise among other things farm visits, assessment of all farming parameters, feeding and management and documentation of the case in a report as well as a follow-up consultation.
