Mosquito-arbovirus ecology

My research focuses on the ecology of zoonotic RNA viruses, particularly mosquito-borne viruses. My collaborators and I integrate zoological and virological approaches to ask questions about how viruses persist in the environment (in foci of transmission) to better understand and predict spillover events into humans.

I lead three main research projects at the VetMedUni in Vienna:

  • Transmission ecology of a sylvatic West Nile virus 1 (lineage 4) which involves a unique ecological association between its vector (Uranotaenia unguiculata, Diptera:Culicidae) and anuran hosts. I am drawing from my background in phonotactic fly 2 behavior to study how host restriction shapes arbovirus ecology and evolution.
  • Urban Culex mosquitoes and the transmission of West Nile virus 3 and Usutu virus 4. This project focuses on identifying and predicting spillover based on microhabitat associations of mosquito vectors in the urban environment. The underlying motivation is the development of a novel mosquito control method for Culex mosquitoes in urban areas. (funded by "Hochschuljubiläumsstiftung der Stadt Wien")
  • Transmission ecology of a European California encephalitis orthobunyavirus, Tahyna virus, which is transmitted by floodwater mosquitoes. In addition to defining vertebrate amplifying hosts 5 and vector species, vector competence experiments have revealed an interesting phenotype of the virus in invasive mosquito species.


I maintain an active research collaboration with Colleen Jonsson (University of Tennessee Health Science Center) and Robert Owen (Texas Tech University) on rodent-borne orthohantavirus ecology 6; and I have recently formed collaborations with researchers at Mohammed bin Rashid Medical University in Dubai to study emerging viruses (such as MERS-CoV, CCHFV) and mosquito-borne viruses in the UAE 7.

Previously I have worked on animal models of pathogenic Influenza A viruses in ferrets 8 and mice 9, focusing on the innate cellular immune response 10 to virus infection.
