About us

The central purpose of the Research Institute of Wildlife Ecology is to study the needs and behaviour of wild animals in ecological contexts, thus establishing the scientific basis for efficient nature,-  species,- and environment conservation, and for sustainable use of multi-functional landscapes.

The institute undertakes long-term, inter-disciplinary and international research at different levels: individual, population, ecosystem, and landscape.  We are particularly proud of the close collaboration between scientists from various disciplines, such as biology, veterinary science and genetics, at the Institute.  In the process we employ a variety of methods, from simple observation to chemical analysis, molecular biology and mathematical modelling.

Based on solid research results we develop practical concepts and solutions to ensure suitable habitats for wildlife even in multi-functional landscapes, and to reduce human-wildlife conflicts.

Areas of work

  • Basic and applied research in landscapes used for agriculture and forestry, urban regions, and protected areas at national and international levels
  • Services for public and private entities, such as advisory services, ecological assessments, and veterinary science diagnosis
  • Interdisciplinary university-level teaching, training seminars, and environmental education

Together with the Konrad-Lorenz-Institute of Ethology [Link 2] we form the Department of Integrative Biology and Evolution [Link 3] of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna (Vetmeduni Vienna).
