The Institute of Microbiology focuses on animal infection biology, hygiene and food safety.

Current research concentrates on understanding mechanisms of virulence and persistence of selected bacterial pathogens belonging to different genera, such as Bacillus, Mycoplasma and Staphylococcus, with special reference to host pathogen interactions. Deciphering the molecular basis of pathogenicity opens new avenues for improved diagnostics and novel treatment and prevention strategies.

The diagnostic lab examines clinical samples from various animal species employing standard tests, molecular detection and typing methods, as well as innovative techniques for species identification. Additional foci are molecular epidemiological analyses and classification of taxonomically non-classified pathogens.
