Working Group Dr. Alois Schmalwieser

The research activities of the Environmental Health WG (sensu "Interrelationships between the environment and human, animal and ecosystem health") focus on the following main research areas:

(1) Photobiological effects of solar ultraviolet radiation and their modification by climate change

Long-term monitoring of biologically effective solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation (sunburn, DNA damage, ...)

Influence of solar UV radiation on skin (pigmentation, skin aging, sunburn, skin cancer, vitamin D,....)

Methods of sun protection in animals and humans

Influence of solar UV radiation on airborne pathogens (corona viruses,...) and their propagation

Vision in the UV range (birds,....)

(2) Photobiological effects of artificial ultraviolet radiation in consideration of increasing environmental pollution and resource scarcity

Disinfection of drinking, re-use, ballast, pool and waste water by UV radiation

Influence of artificial UV radiation on waterborne pathogens (cholera, EHEC, ...)

Energy efficiency of UV disinfection systems

Energy efficiency of UV lamps
