Quantitative morphology

At our Institute the quantification of morphological structures encompasses macroscopic as well as microscopic analyses. The goal of quantitative morphology is to generate reproducible and reliable data from morphometric measurements. In order to achieve this objective, preliminary studies must be carried out on the relevant research material in order to determine the best possible design for a research study. Various measurement techniques (digital measurements) and imaging procedures (X-ray, ultrasound, computer and magnetic resonance tomography, µCT) are available in the anatomical areas. For histological assessments, histochemically and immunohistochemically stained specimens are recorded with digital cameras and evaluated with specific software programmes. In the area of light and electron microscopy, virtual three-dimensional models are prepared from serial sections to enable tracking and measuring the smallest structures in tissue.
