Dr. Foris is an Assistant Professor of Farm Animal Welfare whose research bridges animal behavior, welfare science, and precision livestock farming. Her work focuses on moving beyond traditional observational studies and contributing to a more nuanced and data-driven understanding of farm animal welfare. She integrates sensor-based technologies and AI tools to better capture and interpret subtle behavioral patterns for on-farm welfare monitoring.

Her current studies in dairy cattle revolve around less-studied behaviors such as brush use and drinking behavior, key indicators of welfare that often remain overlooked in conventional assessment methods. By harnessing automated monitoring systems, she also investigates how social relationships such as dominance or socio-positive bonds shape behavioral outcomes at the individual and group level.

To develop valid and feasible welfare monitoring tools, Dr. Foris works in collaboration with the Precision Livestock Farming Hub at Vetmeduni. The goal of this line of research is to deliver solutions that allow farmers, researchers, and policymakers to better assess, safeguard, and improve the welfare of animals in diverse production systems.
