Since joining Vetmeduni in 2021, my laboratory and I have been dedicated to advancing the field of mitochondrial biology.

We investigate mitochondrial biology with a special emphasis on mitochondrial cation release systems. A central focus of our research is LETM1, a crucial component of the mitochondrial K⁺/H⁺ exchanger that plays a vital role in maintaining mitochondrial ion balance and osmoregulation. This fundamental function influences not only cellular metabolism but also has far-reaching effects on the immune system, neuromuscular functions, and overall viability.

Another key area of our work is exploring the LETM1 interactome. We have identified TMBIM5 as a novel LETM1 interactor and the long-sought mitochondrial Ca²⁺/H⁺ exchanger, which is essential for preserving mitochondrial integrity, especially under stress conditions. By studying the functional interactions of LETM1, we aim to uncover their roles in various diseases, including neurodegenerative and cardiovascular disorders.

Our multidisciplinary approach combines molecular biology, biochemistry, and advanced imaging techniques to unravel how mitochondrial cation and volume homeostasis regulate cellular processes and impact organismal health. Ultimately, our findings seek to contribute to the development of new therapeutic strategies targeting diseases linked to mitochondrial dysfunction.
