One Health: Flies threaten domestic pigs with Staphylococcus aureus - 10/2025

The bacterium Staphylococcus aureus is ubiquitous and generally harmless. However, the bacterium can also be pathogenic and its resistant forms are known as "hospital germs". Livestock farming and agriculture are partly responsible for the resistance - a classic One Health scenario where environmental, animal and human health are seen in conjunction. A recent study by the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna now shows that flies play an important role in the development of resistance. They act as vectors in domestic pigs.

Vetmeduni scientists receive PRRS Award - 11/2024

This year's European PRRS Research Award 2024 went to Andrea Buzanich-Ladinig and Victoria Schnitzler from the Clinical Department of Livestock and Food Systems Safety at Vetmeduni Vienna. The two researchers were awarded the prize by Boehringer-Ingelheim for their work on porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS).
