The Department of Biological Sciences and Pathobiology is the main pillar of the research specialisations (profile lines) ‘Physiological Processes’, ‘Infection and Prevention’ and ‘Animal Models and Veterinary Biotechnology’ at the Vetmeduni. It makes significant scientific contributions to the following fields of research: 

- Physiology, morphology and pathology
- Molecular and population genetics
- Regenerative and comparative medicine 
- Molecular pathogenicity mechanisms and infection medicine
- Mechanisms of cancer, inflammation and stress development
- Molecular intervention strategies in the development of disease
- Development of cell-, organ- and organism-based biomodels
