Conference: Austria 3R Days at Vetmeduni
From 28 to 30 April 2026, the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna became the meeting place for the 3Rs and NAMs community. Under the motto “Building Bridges – Bursting Bubbles: Spotlights on 3Rs & NAMs,” researchers, regulatory representatives, and other stakeholders discussed the latest developments around Replace, Reduce, and Refine, as well as NAMs (New Approach Methods), and set new impulses for practice.
The conference was opened, among others, by Minister of Science Eva-Maria Holzleitner and Vetmeduni Vice-Rector Martina Marchetti-Deschmann, who underscored the importance of the 3Rs and NAMs for high-quality, future-oriented research. Doris Wilflingseder, Professor of Infectiology at the Ignaz Semmelweis Institute/Vetmeduni, also played a key role in shaping the program as one of the lead organizers.
Organized by the RepRefRed Society and the Austrian 3R Center, the event focused squarely on exchange, networking, and implementation: building bridges across disciplines, challenging entrenched thinking, and deepening dialogue.
In Vetmeduni’s ceremonial hall, the program ranged from improved study design and statistics to concrete refinement strategies and alternative approaches such as in vitro and in silico methods; new technologies, especially AI, were highlighted as drivers of the 3Rs. The aim was to strengthen practical solutions for preclinical research while simultaneously raising scientific quality. As a supporting member, Vetmeduni promotes the ongoing advancement of the 3Rs and NAMs.
Thematically, the sessions explored NAMs and the 3Rs in infectiology, oncology, and clinical translation, spotlighted refinement and reduction, and addressed interfaces between science, regulation, and practice. Complementary industry sessions, “Start-ups in 3Rs and NAMs,” and AI-focused tracks rounded out the program. A one-minute poster jam and selected short talks showcased fresh ideas from early-career researchers. Intensive networking formats and strong participation underscored the dynamism of the 3R community.
