The medal of honour, established by the Society in recognition of the former highly distinguished Rector and surgeon, Prof. Dr med. and Dr med. vet. Josef Bayer (1847–1925), is awarded to Austrian veterinary surgeons practising in the field – and, in exceptional cases, to their foreign counterparts – as a mark of recognition for outstanding scientific achievements.

Candidates must be nominated by a committee chaired by the First Vice-President. The Board of Trustees selects the recipient for the respective year by secret ballot.

This prize is named after the former Professor of Physiology at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. Dr. med. Armin Tschermak, Edler von Seysenegg (1870–1952), and is currently endowed with 5,000 euros annually. This award is intended for early-career academics at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, and is designed to recognise outstanding scientific work. The selection is made by a committee of the Board of Trustees, comprising professors and lecturers who are members of the Board of Trustees, chaired by the First Vice-President; the final decision is taken by the Board of Trustees.
