The University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna (Vetmeduni) has appointed Christian Gülly as its new Vice Rector for Research, International Affairs and Sustainability. With this appointment, the university is placing its trust in an experienced scientist and research infrastructure strategist. On 16 September 2026, Vetmeduni’s University Council unanimously elected Christian Gülly as the new Vice Rector for Research, International Affairs and Sustainability. A molecular biologist by training, he brings many years of leadership experience in research and infrastructure development. At the Medical University of Graz, he headed the Research Infrastructure organisational unit as well as the Centre for Medical Basic Research. Prior to that, he led the Core Facility Molecular Biology and, for several years, the Biobank Graz. He is a member of the Biobanking Steering Group, the Medical Technology Advisory Board at Graz University Hospital, and the Sustainability Working Group at the Medical University of Graz.

His areas of expertise include strategic development and quality management, infrastructure and project management, as well as staff leadership.

Priorities and objectives at Vetmeduni

In his new role, Christian Gülly aims to systematically enhance Vetmeduni’s international visibility and strengthen One Health as a unifying theme. “Excellent, modern research requires a clear profile, reliable infrastructures, strategic partnerships, and a culture of scientific and societal responsibility. My motto is: pool strengths, create critical mass, and develop centres of excellence from there. My predecessor, Martina Marchetti-Deschmann, has done outstanding work in this area, and I am delighted to be able to build on this foundation.”

His priorities include strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, further developing and integrating Vetmeduni’s Core Facilities more closely, and establishing a Vetmed Data Hub as a robust research-support ecosystem. Data sharing and transparent governance will be key pillars in sustainably ensuring data quality, reusability and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Rector Matthias Gauly commented: “I look forward to working with Christian Gülly. Coming from the field of human medicine, he is exceptionally well placed to support the entire Rectorate team’s objective of expanding our partnerships - particularly with medical universities - in line with the One Health approach, while consistently strengthening our strategic profile areas.”
