International recognition for teaching at Vetmeduni
Vetmeduni not only assesses its students; it is also assessed itself. This quality assurance process is carried out every seven years by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) and was recently successfully completed. This accreditation guarantees that teaching at Austria’s only veterinary university meets international standards and that all graduates are as well prepared as possible for the wide-ranging field of veterinary medicine.

EAEVE accreditation is a comprehensive, international quality assurance process that reviews key areas of veterinary universities every seven years. It is based on European guidelines and national legal requirements. The focus is on, amongst other things, the curriculum, infrastructure, student support, examination procedures and research – in other words, precisely those areas that characterise day-to-day work at Vetmeduni.
This review was preceded by intensive preparation, two successful mock audits and the production of a detailed self-evaluation report. In March 2026, an international team of assessors finally carried out an on-site visit lasting several days to review all relevant clinical and non-clinical areas, the infrastructure at the campus in Vienna’s Floridsdorf district and at VetFarm in Lower Austria, as well as the teaching and quality processes.
As in 1996, 2006, 2012 and 2019, Austria’s only veterinary university was once again granted full accreditation in 2026, confirming that it is excellently positioned in terms of academic standards, structure and strategy. Thanks to this accreditation, graduates are not only well prepared for all ‘traditional’ veterinary professions, but also meet all the requirements for careers at universities worldwide.
“For us, the feedback from the EAEVE is not only a great honour, but also an incentive to continue developing teaching at our university in the future and to measure the quality of our education against the highest standards. We are particularly pleased with the clear endorsement of the programme’s academic focus: the curriculum combines theory, simulation using animal models and practical work with live animals into a coherent overall concept,” said Barbara Bockstahler, Vice-Rector for Teaching, Teaching Innovations and Clinical Affairs.
Rector Matthias Gauly added: “Our pre-clinical and clinical training was rated as comprehensive, challenging and of a very high standard. The university’s organisation was also explicitly highlighted in a positive light. What pleases me particularly is that the open, respectful collaboration between students, teaching staff and support staff was perceived as a major strength.”

The University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna (Vetmeduni) is Austria’s only academic institution for veterinary medicine, education and research, and is also the oldest of its kind in the German-speaking world – founded in 1765 by Empress Maria Theresa. It employs around 1,500 staff and currently trains around 2,500 students. In addition to its campus in Vienna’s Floridsdorf district, it currently has a further seven sites in Vienna, Lower Austria and Tyrol.
Vetmeduni is accredited by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE). In the latest ‘Shanghai Ranking’, which compares over 2,000 universities worldwide across 57 academic disciplines, Vetmeduni ranks 6th in the world in the ‘Veterinary Sciences’ category and 2nd in Europe, behind Ghent University.
