Cameron Strachan receives the ALIMENTARIUS Science Prize
The ALIMENTARIUS award presented by the trade journal DIE ERNÄHRUNG honors outstanding theses of particular relevance to the food industry. This year, the coveted science prize went, among others, to Cameron Strachan, PhD at the Center for Food Sciences and Public Veterinary Medicine at Vetmeduni. He researches how to feed cows in ways that keep their digestive systems stable, maintaining their health and performance. The award ceremony took place on June 10, 2026, at the VIENNABallhaus.
Why this research matters
Cameron Strachan studies the microbes in a cow’s rumen. These tiny helpers break down feed and produce substances vital to the animals. Some microbes operate differently: they use different nutrients and generate different end products, such as short-chain fatty acids or compounds derived from lactate. These products directly influence how efficiently the cow utilizes its feed, how stable digestion remains, and the animal’s overall well-being. The central idea: by understanding which microbes dominate under which feeding regimes and what they produce, we can design rations more effectively and deploy additives more precisely.
From the lab to practice
The work goes beyond correlations to explain the underlying mechanisms: why certain microbes gain the upper hand with particular feeds and what the consequences are. Especially noteworthy: Cameron Strachan highlights differences among microbes that inhabit the rumen wall, as well as between two types that metabolize lactate - key insights for managing feeding peaks and the risk of acidosis more effectively. The result is a practical framework that links fermentation measurements to microbial behavior, thereby informing feeding decisions. Translation into practice is already underway: a project on non-invasive saliva testing has started to enable simple on-farm detection of relevant microbes and data-driven adjustments to feeding.
Strachan is a computational biologist specializing in population genomics and multi-omics. Since 2025 he has worked as a Postdoc/Principal Investigator at the Austrian Competence Centre (FFoQSI); since 2020 he has taught at the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt. Previously, he was co-founder and data scientist at Prospect Bio. He earned his PhD with distinction from Vetmeduni in 2025.
