Entrance exams at Austria’s only veterinary university

On 22 July, the entrance exams for the degree programme in veterinary medicine at Vetmeduni in Vienna will begin. Once again this year, around 1,800 young people have applied for the 223 places currently available.

Places on the programme at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna (Vetmeduni) are highly sought-after: for the veterinary medicine degree programme – a prerequisite for any career in veterinary medicine – around 1,800 young people apply each year for the current 223 places. The written tests will take place on 22 and 23 July 2026 at the Vetmeduni campus in Vienna-Floridsdorf. The exam material covers scientific subjects from Year 9 onwards, with a focus on biology, chemistry and physics. The 370-page study guide, which has been available on the website since March 2026, also covers issues relating to animal ethics and the One Health approach, which considers the health of animals, humans and the environment as a whole.

For the federal states of Burgenland, Carinthia and Salzburg, a total of up to 11 places are earmarked for ‘tasks in the public interest’ in the 2026/2027 academic year. For these places, applicants receive benefits from their federal state in return for a commitment to work in that federal state for a certain period after graduation, for example as an official veterinary surgeon.

A Vetmeduni for the whole of Austria

Vetmeduni in Vienna connects its students at the branch campuses in Lower Austria and Tyrol with key stakeholders in the federal states – such as vets and farmers, clinics and abattoirs. Further branch campuses in Upper Austria, Salzburg and Styria are planned for this year.

Through the dedicated study places, the branch campuses and numerous other activities as part of the VetmedRegio initiative, Vetmeduni supports federal and provincial policymakers, as well as the Austrian Veterinary Chamber, in their efforts to ensure comprehensive veterinary care, particularly in rural regions.

In addition to the ‘classic’ veterinary medicine programme, Vetmeduni also offers admission procedures for the Bachelor’s degree programme in Biomedicine and Biotechnology, the Master’s degree programme in Biomedicine, and the Interdisciplinary Master’s programme in Human-Animal Interactions.

Vetmeduni

The University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna (Vetmeduni) is Austria’s only academic institution for veterinary medicine, education and research, and is also the oldest of its kind in the German-speaking world – founded in 1765 by Empress Maria Theresa. It employs around 1,500 staff and currently trains around 2,500 students.
