Born 1964 in Neunkirchen, Austria; 1982 school leaving examination at (classical humanistic grammar school) Gymnasium Sachsenbrunn (Kirchberg/Wechsel, Austria), 1983–1988 studies of biology (main subject: zoology, minor subject: philosophy and philosophy of science) at the University of Vienna; 1988 diploma (Mag. rer. nat.), 1991 doctoral graduation (Dr. rer. nat.); 1991– 2000 university assistant of Prof. Rupert Riedl at the Institute of Zoology (Faculty of Natural Sciences); 1995–2003 Head of the Department of Theoretical Biology, 2000 postdoctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation) for zoology und Associate Professor; 2005 Head of faculty’s priority research program “Cognition” (Faculty of Life Sciences), 2005–08 coordinator of the EU-funded research project EDICI; 2008–13 Austrian representative of the ESF network program “COMPCOG”; guest professor at Charles University, Prague (Czech Republic) and Salvador da Bahia (Brasil); 2010 Head and co-founder of the Department of Cognitive Biology at the University of Vienna; 2011 appointment as full professor (chair) for the natural science of animal ethics and human-animal-interactions at the Messerli Research Institute, University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, Medical University of Vienna (double appointment) and University of Vienna; spokesman of the institute 2011-2014.
