Enterobacteriaceae, including Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, frequently cause bovine mastitis. In the context of mastitis, these bacteria are classified as environmental pathogens and grouped as coliforms. Assoc. Prof. Naoki Suzuki focuses on iron-mediated host-pathogen interactions in mastitis, as well as within-farm dissemination and transmission dynamics of Enterobacteriaceae based on molecular epidemiological studies. In this guest lecture, he offers an integrated discussion of pathogenic strategies and farm-level dynamics. In addition, drawing on over seven years of clinical experience, he discusses whether changes and modernisation of milking systems may influence pathogen dissemination from a bacteriological perspective.
